Comments on GL2 review

<!-- Rating:</B> 4<img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><BR> --><BR>Robin,

You did a really nice job of reviewing the GL2. Thank you very much!

Just a few thoughts:

I wish you had added your thoughts on the actual color differences between Canon and Sony (i.e., do you think one runs a little cooler? warmer?) This is a really important aspect of people\'s camera selection!

I recently read a review (GL2 vs. TRV950) which included a color test -- the person who wrote it discussed his trouble adjusting the GL2 color to make it accurate. I\'ve had a few similar problems.

I find the GL2 is cool and am having trouble warming it up....

Also, I think it would have been worth mentioning the VX2000 just a bit more. The GL2 and VX2000 are so close in price now, that many consumers, like me, will probably start looking at the VX2000 even if they hadn\'t intended to, originally. They are certainly different cameras, but actually the GL2 and VX2000 are closer in price now then the GL2 and TRV950!

Having said this, thanks again though, for all your hard work.

-Heidi

Frame Mode = 30 or 25 frames/sec not 15

GL2 looks awesome

<!-- Rating:</B> 4.5<img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/half_star.gif" width=12 height=18><BR> --><BR>This if the first really serious onepiece video camera from Canon since the A1 Digital Hi8 unit, I owned one and loved it till it broke. This thing packs all the niceties of the XL1S into a more practiclal and affordable package. Heidi is right this thing has moved the target up market taking it to the VX. Leaving Sony\'s low end 3 chipper in the gadget bin. I played with one on the floor of Frys and was impressed with how business like the unit is. The only thing the VX has over it is lowlight sensitivity and Sony\'s bullet proof reputation. Another overlooked feature is the 4 capsule mike like the VX 1000 had that was dropped on the 2K. So I\'m really stoked about this unit but I will wait for the inital bugs to get worked out and would not buy one without an extended warranty based on previous experiences with Canon\'s products and reports of problems with GL1\'s.

Canon GL2

<!-- Rating:</B> 4.5<img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/half_star.gif" width=12 height=18><BR> --><BR>This is a really good & thorough review. I have a Gl-1 and really like it. However, I have fallen for the Gl-2, and I wish Robin could have made some quantitative comparison between the Gl-1 and Gl-2 as regards resolution. I believe she said that both were close, maybe very close. However, I would also hope that the Gl-2 picture is still noticeably finer than the Gl-1 or the Sony, for that matter. I have had two Sonys from the 8mm & hi-band days, but my Canon conversion started with the LX1 & 2, the 1st Optura, the XL-1, and now the Gl-1. I am still looking forward to getting the new & improved Gl-2. Will look forward to more reviews where perhaps resolution numbers will be shown.

Great review. Minor mistakes.

<!-- Rating:</B> 4.5<img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/half_star.gif" width=12 height=18><BR> --><BR>Thanks for the great review. I have just ordered my GL2! My only complaint is that the GL2 is over-priced when compared to the GL1. I suppose Canon decided that since the new GL2 has features very comparable to the Sony VX2000, they can also charge about the same.

I\'ve looked at the VX2000, and my opinion is that the only feature that it has over the GL2 is better low light performance. But nobody beats GL2s powerful 20x zoom lens.

I am glad that Canon gives us improved camcorders, while Sony puts out degraded models (the new TRV950 being like an anemic, diet version of the older and better TRV900). Meanwhile, Panasonic doesn\'t even bother to make their best camcorders (such as the MX3000 and the MX5000) available in North America. So, thank God for Canon!

Just a couple of minor comments on this review. Robin, do you use some sort of dictating (voice to text) software instead of typing? There are several typos in the review that do not seem like keyboard typos, but rather mistakes of a phonetic kind. Examples:

1. It\'s "mute". (Instead of it\'s a "moot" point.)
2. The focus ring give a fair "about" of tension (instead of "amount" of tension). - Maybe you had a cold and plugged up nose when you were dictating this! <grin>

Finally, in the portion that summarizes the differences between the GL2 and the TRV950, the review got somehow turned completely upside-down when it says: "However, the TRV950 has a smaller LCD screen, 2.5 in. to 3.5 in."

The truth is, of course, exactly the opposite, with GL2 having the smaller 2.5 inch LCD, which is actually self-evident in what was said earlier in the review. So, this was really just another "typo" of sorts.

Other than that, an excellent review! Thanks.

Quantitatively Excellent amount of Data Robin.

<!-- Rating:</B> 3.5<img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/half_star.gif" width=12 height=18><BR> --><BR>Robin, quantitatively, this review shows that you were quite detail oriented in your review of the GL2. Thanks for not babying\' us, the readers, who need the real meat. You gave us a substantial amount of information in what was obviously a real hands on review of the camera.

My exception to this review is in the numerous typos mentioned by Emelio above, and in the conclusions that you drew which were sometimes slightly at odds with the great data that you just presented.

When presenting this quantity of data, which, btw i really appreciate, it might be appropriate to use an outliner which enables you to write in a more organized fashion. Your linux video review which was much shorter also exhibited some of the same characteristics.

You opened my eyes to the Gain db flexibility in low light situations which is also on my Canon XL1s. While in manual mode, even in low light situations, i have frequently and ignorantly left it in automatic mode. So thanks for that tip.

Incidently, with the exception of the Florite Lens and 20X Zoom, which the XL1s does not have, most of these features are nearly identical to the same feature set on the heavier, slightly more professional (read more expensive) Canon XL1s. The only major difference apart from packaging appears to be the size of the CCD 1/4 inch vs. 1/3 inch for the XL1s and the number of pixels.

Robin, I am definately a Canon guy and side with you in most of your subjective opinions, however in defense of the TRV950, which i have only played with in a Sony showroom, it would be fairer to say that the TRV950 has 690,000 pixels compared to the 410,000 on the canon and that it truly records at a tested 530+ Horizontal lines of resolution compared to the GL2\'s tested 515 horizontal lines. Further, the TRV950 has that interesting BlueTooth technology that 15% of the users might actually find useful or at least mildly interesting.

Just as an aside, we buy Pal based Canon cameras which appear to have about 30-50K more effective pixels over the same NTSC versions.

Regards Trevor

Robin doesn\'t know

<!-- Rating:</B> 1<img src="http://www.camcorderinfo.com/images/icons/star.gif" width=22 height=18><BR> --><BR>If you\'re the editor of this web site and you don\'t bother to check to see if the Sony TRV 950 has optical steady shot than perhaps you need to go back to school.

Although I would agree that the GL2 and the TRV 900 are better camcorders than the TRV 950.

The idea of useing a subjective comparison of camera\'s is not very good for the reader. Just stick with the camera being reviewed.

You didn\'t, like most reviewers, just summarize the different functions. You gave me some real insight, and I can honestly say I learned something. And I loved the comparison between the GL2 and the TRV-950. This is the kind of in-depth, thorough reviews we need more of.

Nowhere anywhere else did it mention that there was a recording light on the front which was rather important to me. I would love to know why the Panasonic is better in movie mode than the GL2. Also, I would like to know if panning is a problem while in movie mode. I cannot wait to receive this camera as it will be used to film my wedding in Disney World in 16:9 widescreen. Please email me with some answers to the questions I have above if you could as I would love to know them as well as how the camera performs in 16:9 mode with movie mode enabled.

Thnaks for a great review.

I like that you compared cameras since most people reading reviews are looking to buy and want to know how the camera holds up to it\'s peers. Wish you would have compared it to the VX2000 more. wish you knew that the 950 had optical stablization, a gaff like that brings the whole review in question.
