Pass through on GR-D72US ?
I see from the the specs that this camera has analog input, but I don't know if this means it can just record digital to tape or if it can pass through the digital to a computer....
Any help will be appreciated,
-Sam

I just got the GRD93, which has the same settings as the 72.
All indicates, that yes, it's pass-thru. But still can't test this out, as I'm still getting a FW PCI card...
Probably not for a couple of weeks though...

No, according to the manual, the 72 and 93 both support pass through. Well, the manual says a model 73, but it appears it is referring to the 72 as the manual is for the 33 and 93 as well.
Page 34 - Dubbing to or from a VCR
(right hand column - middle of the page)
To use this camcorder as a recorder (GR-D93/73
only)
1) Perform steps 1 to 3 in “To use this camcorder as a
player”.
2) Set “S/AV INPUT” to “ON”. ( pg. 25, 28)
3) Set “REC MODE” to “SP” or “LP”. ( pg. 25, 26)
4) Insert the recording cassette in this camcorder.
5) Press the Recording Start/Stop Button to engage the
Record-Pause mode. The “ ” indication appears
on the screen.
6) Press the Recording Start/Stop Button to start
recording. The T indication rotates.
7) Press the Recording Start/Stop Button again to stop
recording. The T indication stops rotating.

Pass through on GR-D72
Yes, I followed those steps, and it will record to tape in digital format; but I couldn't get it to pass through to the computer in real time. I would have to recordto tape and then replay in order to capture it on the computer

Viperfish, have you tried using the camera without a tape to enter passthrough mode? That's how my GR-DV500 does it.

John
I always wondered about this. JVC doesn't mention the pass through in the manual. How do you proceed after you take the tape out?

Just put it in play. Everything that comes in to the camera though the analogue ports is passed on through the Firewire port to the computer. S/AV input should be on, of course. Ignore the "tape" warning on the LCD.

I've gotten pass through (without using a tape) to work on the 93 I just bought. However I was only able to get it to work using Adobe Premiere Pro and not Windows Movie Maker (in testing out two different programs to capture).
I had to somewhat "trick" APP by first ensuring the Audio/Video was set to In on the 93, then start APP in capture mode, then put the 93 in record mode with a tape in, then switch it to playback mode and then finally eject the tape. APP would show that there was no tape but would allow the capture from the device I connected to the 93.
WMM seemed to be caught up in the fact that it sensed no tape and wouldn't allow the capture.
I'm new to camcorders in general, let alone digital, but from my own experience, it seems pass through without a tape could have software limitations to prevent it?

I have also gotten pass through to work
John,
After reading your email, I was tempted to try again with my GR-D72, and I finally got Pass Through to work! However, this worked with Ulead Video capture, not the ImageMaker program that came with the camera. Leaving the tape in or out didn't seem to matter, and I didn't have to do anything special with Play or Record, just set the camera to Play mode and AV menu setting to In.

Viperfish, I'm glad it works for you. -So much more convenient than recording to tape first.
Thickosaurus, All I know is it works for me. It could be that WMM isn't seeing any time stamp codes, but that's just a guess.

I was just guessing about WMM; I don't use it since I'm a Mac user.

Oh, ok. So maybe it is the case from what I've found that Windows Movie Maker just won't allow it, while another software package like Adobe Premiere Pro (or Ulead's equivalent) will work. In general, I just wonder if people are thinking that a particular camcorder doesn't have pass-through (without tape) capability when perhaps it's a limitation on the software end.
