As I am a happy user of Sony's Vegas + DVD Architect, I would like to mention that all of the features the authors say are in Ulead, Pinnacle, etc. are also in Vegas+DVDA. In fact, some of the operations they say you need to do in external programs, such as Photoshop, are already in Vegas.

I'm not sure if Movie Studio, the entry level version of Vegas, has them or not. You'll need to try the demo or read the feature list for Movie Studio for more info.

Enjoy.

the one main limitation of studio 9 is when it comes to the settings for MPEG encoding. studio8 was only CBR. Now, when you make a DVD it's only VBR, but I think only one pass. But it estimates disc size based on CBR. So if you have a 65min project studio says you can't fit it on the disc at the highest settings even if most of it is static and the end files are well within a DVDs capacity. I will say the end quality is better than studio8 however, and it seems to be a bit faster too.

another problem is, you can't take MPEG from any other source and put it on a DVD, Pinnacle forces you to re-render, even if the source MPEG is from studio itself.

Nice thread

I registered. I'm happy. Some stuff I already knew about but others I did not. I print the e-mail and read it before bed.
Thanks Dennis,
Paul

I'm glad people are finding these interesting. Could I ask a favor of one of you? For some reason I didn't get issues 8 and 10. I looked on the site but couldn't find any way to notify them. If one of you would send me those two issues I would appreciate it.

Before I get flooded with articles, please send me a PM here and I'll respond to someone with my email address where you can send.

Thanks.

DCR-HC40E USB 2.0 or 1.0 ? + capturing video

Hi all,

I have newly bought DCR-HC40E . it is quite good.
I tried to capture video ( from camcorder to my laptop) by means of USB cable. But I think its speed is not good enough.

Is the USB port of DCR-HC40E 2.0 or 1.0 ?

Another question is how can I write from miniDV tape to DVD ?

Without copying tape to harddisk, can I burn aDVD?

Do you recommend a software for capturing from tape and burn a DVD , create mpeg /AVI ?

Thank you in advance

You must use Firewire for top quality. USB is lower quality.

You need to buy software that allows you to encode and burn movies to DVD. See other threads here for suggestions.

Some software will let you do that. But its probably better to do it from hard disk so you can edit it first.

TMPGEnc is good for generating MPEG-1 files for Video CD - http://www.tmpgenc.net/ . I use (free) Windows Movie Maker 2 for downloading and editing movies - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...er/default.mspx . Neither of them will (for free) encode or burn for DVD.

DVD Authoring Software

There are many DVD authoring softwares available and I am a bit lost.

From another board, lot of editors use TMPGEnc DVD author program. The price is reasonable at $75 at Amazon.

What software do you recommend or suggest based on your experience?

I am currently using TMPGEnc DVD Author to create DVD's from .AVI files and am pleased with the results. You can download a free fully functional 30 day trial at http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/index.html

I've also used Cyberlink PowerProducer, http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/index.jsp which was my second choice, it may be a bit easier to use. Their demo download is fully functional but is limited to a 30 minute DVD. It also goes from .AVI through all the steps to the actual burning of a DVD.

You can download the above and test on your system before buying.

Rich

Thanks. Everyone has been recommending TMPGenc software for DVD authoring. I guess I'll order that rather than pick up an old copy of Encore.

If you are not doing anything fancy and do not need a lot of control, you cannot beat sonic's mydvd. If you want a little bit more control, I suggest DVD architect2.0 or ULead DVD Workshop. The latter are pricier but as I said you have more control.

I have not use TMPGEnc but I have not heard any bad things aobut it either.
