June 29, 2006 - Yesterday Toshiba announced plans to release their first Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) card. The card will have a 4GB capacity and is scheduled for a September release.
The SDHC format, also known as SD 2.0, allows for larger capacities and faster transfer speeds than traditional SD. Toshiba is promising that the 4GB card will exceed a 4Mbps write speed. At its fastest, the SDHC format will eventually allow for speeds up to 6Mbps, and capacities as high as 32GB.
“Our new SDHC cards are an important development in the SD card family,” to provide higher capacity storage to support video storage applications in camcorders and digital cameras,” said Brian Kumagai, business development manager, NAND Flash, for Toshiba American Electronic Components, Inc.
Already, the technology has been adopted in camcorders. Earlier this month, Panasonic announced the SDR-S150, which captures video and stills to SDHC. They also released matching SDHC cards under their own brand name. No date has been set for their release, but the Japanese equivalent model is due out in nine days.
A price for the Toshiba 4GB SDHC card has not been announced. A brief explanation of SDHC can be found here.
