60Frames attempts web syndication
Posted by Michael Perlman
Most online video sites are part of a huge streaming geyser from a septic tank. Very rarely do we find one worthy of anything relating to praise. Even the exceedingly overhyped YouTube offers some of the most deplorable video quality out there. So, where does the independent filmmaker, writer, or producer turn to when that final video of cats doing the dishes makes you want to you stick your head in a life-size pencil sharpener with James Blunt playing in the background?60Frames launched a new series of 7 web-syndicated shows, or webisodes. I recently watched the premiere episodes of “Douchebag Beach”, “Cockpit”, and “Erik the Librarian” before jumping into a cement mixer and rolling myself down a hill. Not even a guffaw, folks. If you’ve read any of my previous blogs, you know that it takes a lot to impress me, but 60Frames needs to seriously reconsider its lineup. This is base humor at its worst, just with a budget. Go see for yourself.
Back in the day, there was a site called Channel101.com. It’s actually still there. The reason I’m referring to it in past tense is because it used to be good. Channel101.com specialized (they still do--I'm just bitter) in accepting submissions from anyone via mail, good ole’ fashioned postal mail. A test audience would view the five minute submission and then vote, much like a motion picture screening. If an episode was accepted, it ranked in the top five episodes on the site. The creator was then prompted to make a new episode in hopes that the series would eventually grow a stalwart reputation and be voted highly in the next screening. The stakes were high, and content was actually watchable. In fact, Andy Samburg and two other SNL fellows got their start at Channel101.com with their rip on “The OC”, titled “The BU.” Now, Channel101.com is just another cesspool of cringable acting, tedious story lines, and lamer than lame jokes.
If 60Frames took notes from Channel101.com by instilling a voting process executed by viewers, I guarantee the crap meter would go down. You know, 60Frames is reaching out to writers, performers, and producers. If I don’t get there first, will someone please save that sorry site with something that’s actually watchable?
