8 GB SD card unveiled, $189. P2, still $1,200

Posted by Randall Bennett

This week is the big CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany, and as part of it SanDisk says they're going to release an 8GB SD card.  One single SD card, 8 GB, but here's the kicker...  $190.

Panasonic, meanwhile, sells the 8GB P2 card for $1,200.

Granted, the P2 card has some external hardware, but we've seen two major jumps in flash storage capacity in the last year, and Panasonic lagging behind with a $1,200 that might be marginally better than a $190 solution leaves a sour taste in our mouths.  For the under-informed, P2 cards are little more than daisy-chained SD cards!  SanDisk could really gain some pro mindshare if they jumped on the P2 bandwagon.

Panasonic, get your act together.  Everyone is going to abandon the P2 format and just use the HVX200 with external storage if you don't do something quickly.
