May 30, 2007 – This week, Aiptek released the GO-HD, a $299 HD camcorder, recording a 1280 x 720 image in an H.264 format to SD cards. While the camcorder appears to be little more than a low-end knock-off of the Sanyo VPC-HD2, it nevertheless sets a new low price for HD camcorders.
Small companies like Aiptek are in an easy position to capitalize on the public’s appetite for “HD” video. Meeting the minimum requirements for what can be considered high definition is little more than a camera that can record 1280 x 720 (0.9MP) stills at 30fps for sustained periods. Similar camcorders have tested very poorly for overall video quality compared to more legitimate – and more expensive – HD camcorders.
Equipped with a 5MP CMOS sensor, the Aiptek GO-HD offers a 3x optical zoom and still capture up to 2560 x 1920. A 2.4” TFT LCD extends from the left side of the pistol-grip body. Ports include composite, component, and USB. The GO-HD also offers a built-in LED light for night shooting.
The body design appears to be lifted liberally from the Sanyo VPC-HD1 and HD2. The tall, thin body features a rear-mounted up/down zoom toggle and joystick. The LCD panel offers three playback control buttons. There is no indication in the press materials as to a manual control set.
The multiple recording options include 1280 x 720 at 30fps, 720 x 480 at 30fps, and 325 x 240 at 30fps. Files are exported in the .MOV format. Media Player 11 Decoder software ships with the camcorder. A 4GB SD card can store up to 120 minutes of the highest quality video. While, an SD card does not appear to be included, the camcorder does ship with two small batteries and a remote control.
The Aiptek GO-HD retails for $299 and is available now.
