November 26, 2007- Canon has announced an AVCHD-compatible DVD recorder. The DW-100 allows users to record high definition AVCHD footage and standard definition MPEG-2 footage straight to DVD from a camcorder. The DW-100 is only compatible with Canon HDD camcorders, which at the moment narrows the field down to the Canon HG10 (Review, Specs, Recent News, $1299.99).  Recorded DVDs will be compatible with Blu-Ray players and most DVD players, although AVCHD DVDs require a playback device that supports the AVCHD format. The DW-100 has been announced for the Japan market only at this point, and is scheduled for a March 2008 release.
Since Canon is one of the few major manufacturers that does not offer standard definition HDD camcorders, it is a mystery as to why the DW-100 imports high and standard definition footage. Though no statements have been issued by the company regarding upcoming products, the annual explosion of new camcorders is due in January of 2008.
