February 14, 2006 - Red Giant Software has announced the release of Film Fix 1.0 for Macintosh platforms running Adobe After Effects 6.0 and above. Film Fix 1.0 is a series of plug-ins which enable filmmakers and post-production editing companies the opportunity to digitally restore film footage on the desktop.

Film Fix 1.0 provides the ability to restore damage caused by tears, eliminate severe non-linear inter-frame brightness fluctuations, and remove dust and sparkle defects with motion detection information. Many of these restoration processes are fully automatic controls using Red Giant’s “Fast Accurate Motion Estimation” (FAME), are a series of complex algorithms able to identify and separate problem areas from the motion in the footage itself.

This type of software has become increasingly important due to the upsurge of HD restoration of classic Hollywood films. According to Kevin Christopher, the director of technology at Cinepost, transferring old film prints to HD is a complicated process primarily because HD video, “shows the flaws, and broadcast and cable networks all want really clean masters for their HDTV broadcasts.” Film Fix 1.0, he states, is able to cover about 90% of the defects before hand correction is necessary.

With the introduction of Film Fix 1.0 for Macintosh, users on both platforms will have the opportunity to restore and correct footage for HD broadcast or DVD without paying the service fees a production house would charge.

The Film Fix 1.0 is currently available for purchase with an MSRP of $1995. Red Giant provides full support for multi-client and cross platform render through an After Effects render farm. Fix 1.0 will run on Adobe After Effects Version 6.0 and later. Windows users will be able to receive a free cross-grade for the Macintosh OSX version.
