September 24, 2008 - GPS software company Geotate and camcorder manufacturer DXG announced today the creation of the world's first integrated geotagging camcorder. The report states that the product will be based on DXG's DVH586 camcorder and will utilize Yuma geotagging software. The product is expected to be available by the end of 2008. Currently, no price range is available. The addition of GPS technology with video camcorders is not exactly revolutionary. Sony has been offering an attachable GPS accessory unit, the GPS-CS1KASP, since early 2008. It is the built-in, production-ready integration of GPS that makes this Geotate and DXG collaboration a first in the field. Geotate's "Capture Now Process Later" software can automatically geotag footage at the time of recording, marking it with location data that is finalized with latitude and longitude metadata when the footage is transferred to a device with an internet connection. This method allows for footage and images to be tagged without the presence of a mobile phone signal and with minimal power consumption. It is unclear if any specific software is necessary to read the metadata. The announcement also stressed the affordability of the geotagging technology. DXG's president, Mr. Yu, stated, "camera manufacturers can, for the first time, put simple, affordable geotagging technology in the hands of consumers."
Not much is known about DXG's DVH586 other than the plan for GPS integration, as the camcorder is not currently listed on its website. DXG is not known for high quality craftsmanship amongst their products.
This announcement comes just days after Geotate introduced JOBO's photoGPS accessory - an attachable geotagging device designed for digital cameras that uses similar software based-technology. The photoGPS accessory was priced at approximately $232 and will be available in October 2008.
