Guide to Website Analytics: Track Your Video Traffic

Posted by Karen M Cheung

TubeMogulWe can’t all be viral sensations, but there are a few things we can do monitor our traffic to get the validation that all videographers need.  There are plenty of analytics programs, free or subscription-based software that analyzes statistical data to gauge the performance of a website.  Website traffic gives us a clue to how the filmmaker’s brand name or video clip is doing.  Users can monitor who visits your site by measuring the number or unique visitors (how many individuals view the site) and page views (tracking to see how long a person browses the site).  Here is a list of our favorites for the budding videographer:

TubeMogul

TubeMogul is both a video host and analytics website.  The free service allows registered users to upload clips that are tracked with aggregated users.  This all-purpose site allows users to post their video and understand their viewership.

Google AnalyticsGoogle Analytics

This free program lays out yearly and weekly graphs of visitors to your website.  It will also gauge what the traffic in easy to read data charts based on time of year and by location of the visitors.

Technorati
Dedicated to bloggers, this website tracks the emerging socialites of our generation, not the literati or glitterati, but the “technorati” of the online community.  Users gain authority (or popularity) based on the number of people that mark you as their favorite go-to-blog.  As many know, adding a blog to your personal website is key in boosting overall traffic.

Compete.com

As the name indicates, Compete.com compares websites, mapping out direct competitors in the form of line graphs.  You can gauge your popularity points with other videographers in your area using the monthly data points.

Mashable has an extensive list of analytics programs to choose from with brief blurbs about each one, but we found these few made the biggest impact on us to help utilize Web 2.0 tools to your advantage for online video.
