H.264 on a stick
Posted by Adam Nielson
We recently posted a prediction from tech writer Robert X. Cringely about Apple updating their entire computer line with hardware based H.264 encoders. Only time will tell if Cringely was right, but in the mean time Elgato systems is picking up the slack. The company, known for their USB TV tuners, just announced a thumb sized USB video encoder for Macs. According to Elgato, the Turbo 264 speeds up the encoding process two to four times over built in hardware, and frees up the processor for other computing duties.Elgato is marketing the encoder as a means to compress videos for Apple TV, iPod and the upcoming iPhone, and even includes software to handle the process. However, the Turbo 264 will also work with any Quicktime based video application, which exports to H.264, provided users have a Pro license. This is great news for editors who use Final Cut Pro or a handful of other Quicktime based editing systems. H.264 is becoming a viable delivery medium, especially over the web, and if the Turbo 264 shortens compressions times as much as Elgato claims, the little USB stick could become very popular indeed.
