HD-DVD And Blu Ray Movies On One Disc

Posted by Richard Baguley

This is interesting: two engineers at Warner Brothers have worked out a way to put a Blu-ray, HD-DVD and standard resolution DVD version of a movie on the same disc. Alan Bell and Lewis Ostroer worked out that they could put the two high definition formats on the same side of a disc, as the two data layers are at different depths. The standard definition version is on the other side of the disc. They’ve patented the technique: you can read the entire patent application here. This is a very interesting development: perhaps we’ll now begin to see an end to the pointless high def DVD format war.
