HDNet to go 4K with productions

Posted by Randall Bennett

hdnet logoSure, HDNet and the rest of us will have to wait a little bit longer to get our proverbial 4K workflows up to speed, but that didn't stop Mark Cuban's flagship network from announcing they're going to go past regular ol' HD and go the 4K route for all the video they shoot utilizing Jim Jannard's super-HD wonder. Cuban's grand ambitions go beyond your living room though, since he also owns Landmark Cinemas, he's looking at potentially theater-casting content.  Currently, HDNet acquires everything at 1080i and upconverts the rest of the footage to 1080i for broadcast on HDNet.  Now, it looks like they'll be down-converting for now.  No word on how HDNet's live productions fit into the mix, since there aren't any 4k live switchers we're aware of.
