January 9, 2009 – Panasonic announced two new standard definition hard disc drive camcorders: the SDR-H80 and SDR-H90. These two models come as upgrades to last year's SDR-H40 and SDR-H60. Among other improvements, the two new camcorders will feature Panasonic's new 70x optical zoom—currently the most powerful optical zoom available on a consumer camcorder.
Panasonic has also made improvements to its Intelligent Auto (iA) technologies. This includes the optical image stabilization as well as Face Detection and Scene Detection, which prompts the camcorder to select the most appropriate scene mode for you. Both 2009 models have a Quick Start mode to make it easier for consumers to capture spontaneous moments.
The SDR-H80 and SDR-H90 will also feature options for facilitating video sharing. Both will include the ability to upload to YouTube, although only video recorded in the low quality "Web Mode" will be compatible with this feature. All video will be compatible with Panasonic's DVD burner, which can be connected to the camcorder via USB for easy DVD creation.
The Panasonic SDR-H80 will record to either SD/SDHC memory cards or the internal 60GB hard disc drive, while the Panasonic SDR-H90 will record to SD/SDHC memory cards or the 80GB HDD. The SDR-H80 will be available in silver, blue, red, and black for an expected MSRP of $449.95. The SDR-H90 will come only in black for an expected MSRP of $499.95. Both models are expected to ship in April.
