At the National Association of Broadcasters annual convention, JVC announced today its second competitor omin the HD market. Coming on the heels of Panasonic’s announcement yesterday, JVC’s GY-HD100U utilizes the HDV format also adopted by Sharp, Sony, and Canon. This is the same format which Sony’s HDR-FX1 uses as well.
The GY-HD100U is equipped with three 1/3-inch CCD image sensors, each with 1280 x 720 pixels. These are native 16:9 CCDs, offering the camcorder the same true widescreen mode seen on Panasonic’s new AG-HVX200, available this fall.
A great new feature on the GY-HD100U is its ability to record true 720/24P recordings. In addition to this the camcorder can record 720/30P, 480/60i, and 480/24P to MiniDV tape. It will also output 720/60P uncompressed video over its component output connectors.
The camcorder allows for a certain amount of customization with settings for gamma and skin tone detection. All user parameters can be stored on a removable SD memory card and can be transferred to another GY-HD100U if desired.

The camcorder also includes a detachable 16x Servo Fujinon HD lens. Other available lens options include a 13x (3.5mm) wide zoom HD lens, a wide-angle converter for the standard 16x lens, and an adapter allowing standard ½-inch lenses to be used on the camera. A ‘focus assist’ function allows for better focus detail during HD recording. The GY-HD100U includes two built-in Neutral Density Filters (1/8 and 1/32).
The GY-HD100U has a built-in HD recording system which allows it to record high definition images on MiniDV tape. Data is recorded in an MPEG2 format. The camcorder can also be attached to an external hard disk for more convenient transfer.
The GY-HD100U has 2 XLR audio inputs and records CD quality digital audio, with independent controls for each channel. In addition to providing HD true progressive 24P superior quality recordings, making it ideal for live broadcasting, remote news and POV applications, an optional module can convert the uncompressed signal to HD-SDI.

The GY-HD100U’s shoulder design allows for almost all camera and viewfinder controls to be on the left side of the camcorder. A specially designed Fujinon HD lens provides automatic or manual iris control, with smooth servo zoom and backfocus adjustment. A convenient IEEE 1394 interface permits simple, quick connection to an external dual media recording option, a PC or NLE for easy downloading, and editing or archiving.
Accessories for the GY-HD100U include shotgun microphone, Anton-Bauer Power system, Quick-Release tripod mounting plate, and DTE™ disc recording module.
