Introduction
The JVC GZ-HM400The GZ-HM400 ($999 MSRP) is the larger, more sophisticated cousin model to the JVC GZ-X900. While both camcorders have similar imaging specifications, the GZ-HM400 is packed with extra controls, 32GB of internal memory, and a splendid adjustment dial that puts JVC's Laser Touch system to shame.

Unfortunately, the GZ-HM400 suffered from the same low light difficulties that plagued the GZ-X900, although it did represent a significant improvement in that category.

Section The Good The Bad
Product Tour Matte finish keeps the camcorder's body free from fingerprints Right-side design is not ergonomic or comfortable
Color & Noise Performance Good color accuracy and low noise levels in bright light No color adjustment controls
Motion & Sharpness Performance Excellent sharpness and crisp, smooth motion No 24p or 30p shooting mode
Low Light Performance Much better than previous high-end model from JVC, the GZ-X900 Sensitivity is still too low; noise is very noticeable in low light
Compression & Media 32GB of internal flash memory; provided software is simple and useful AVCHD footage can be difficult to work with; no standard definition shooting options
Manual Controls Adjustment dial and zoom rocker offer precise control Small range of aperture options; manual white balance doesn't always work too well
Still Features Tons of features, good sharpness scores, good color accuracy Noise levels were too high
Handling & Use Adjustment dial and dedicated buttons allow for quick transition between controls Uncomfortable hand strap; no viewfinder; Laser Touch system is a pain
Playback & Connectivity 1080/60p upconversion for playback; lots of internal editing features Shoe adapter is cheap and easy to misplace
Audio & Other Features High-speed recording is fun for capturing slow-motion sequences Built-in mic is placed poorly
