Lucid Movement = high-speed fun

Posted by Adam Nielson

Sometimes we have to put aside the business of video and remember it's really all about good clean (messy) fun. Lucid Movement is a video blog featuring high-speed camera clips of everyday things meeting an untimely demise. The site features things like a tomato in a blender, and an eggsplosion all shot at an ultra-high frame rate, and "slowed down" for our viewing pleasure.

The principle of high-sped photography is an interesting one. A special camera shoots at somewhere between 500 to 2000 frames per second. The camera is capturing over 500 times the amount of normal stills that make up a regular video clip. After the shoot, the footage gets played back at a normal frame rate, and reveals the action in very detailed slow motion. There are plenty of these sorts of clips floating around the net, but Lucid Movement actually gives complete information about the camera, lens and settings used for each clip. They also sell full resolution versions of their clip at very reasonable prices. A video geek could (and did) spend hours looking at these clips, and marveling at the beauty and simplicity of clips like quarter into water. See the rest of the clips at their blog.
