March 09, 2007Mammoth goes 4k with REDOne
High-end stock footage supplier Mammoth HD announced the May 2007 launch of their new 4k stock video library. Short for 4,000 pixels across, the 4k library will feature some of the highest resolution images in the business, and coincides with the launch of the RED camera system. The stock clips should fit perfectly into a RED 4kwork-flow, because Mammoth HD shooter Steve Gibby is using REDOne #8 (the 8th RED in production) to shoot them. For those of you who are unfamiliar with REDOne, it is a sub $20,000 video camera that can capture images at resolutions over four times higher than HDTV. That may sound like a lot of money, but considering the price of a television quality HD camera, which shoots at 1/4 the resolution, RED could be a very big deal for TV and film.
In addition to the Camera, RED is also developing conversion software calledREDCINE, which Mammoth HD will use to offer the clips at all lower resolutions. No stock footage is available yet, but interested parties can check out Mammoth's 4k RED pre-launch gallery.
