Metacafe producers cry out after rewards changes

Posted by Karen M Cheung

MetacafeMetacafe on Monday announced on its company blog the new criteria for eligible videos for the Producer Rewards program.  The one-year Rewards program allows video makers to earn some money if their content receives high traffic numbers. After earning $100 for hitting the 20,000-view mark, users can earn $5 per every subsequent 1,000 views. The new rules, however, block certain types of videos.

Metacafe will no longer accept the following types of content:
-Videos that have sexual arousal as their primary purpose
-Videos that are primary promotional vehicles for a product or service
-Videos that merely feature a person who is not doing anything entertaining or exception
-Instructional videos that is harmful such as a how-to to bomb-making
-“Trend exhausted” videos that are specifically copycats

What happens for the lewd, promotional, or simply boring videos that already existed on the site? They got the ax. Metacafe pulled the content from the site. The producers of these kinds of viral videos will no longer receive payments after Feb. 11, 2008.

After public outcry on the forums, Metacafe provided further explanation yesterday. Metacafe had to pull the content immediately to stop the number of view counts to ensure correct payments. Those producers can republish on the site with the understanding that they aren’t suited to the Rewards Program, therefore, not eligible for payment anymore.
