New LED Light Fits Onto Lens

Posted by Richard Baguley

This looks like an interesting way to light a video: the lenslite is an LED light source that fits around the lens of the camera, instead of the more common mounting position above the camera. The benefit of this is that it’s a much more flattering way to light faces: they provide shadowless light that avoids the problem of people looking like they have double chins or beards caused by the shadow of the light coming from above. You may have seen still photographers use something similar called a ring flash.

The lenslite is designed to balance on the Sony Z1: it fits onto two bars, which attach to the underside of the camcorder (mounts for other camcorders are also available). It’s also adjustable, allowing the user to control the overall brightness and to light individual quarters of the lighting array. It’s not cheap at $4230, but it might be worth considering if you are a serious videographer that does a lot of head & shoulders shots.
