New Super-HiDef Camera

Posted by Richard Baguley

I have no idea if this is for real, but a company called Red.com have announced a new video camera, which they claim will shoot video at a resolution of 4520 by 2540 pixels at 60 frames per second. That’s a big claim: it’s more than double the resolution of current Hi-Def cameras. They are calling the new format UHD-2540P, and the new camera that they have announced will also use standard 35mm PL film camera mount lenses: a big, big deal for a film company that’s got a lot of these lenses, but wants to switch to shooting video. There’s no information on pricing or availability yet (most of their Web site reads “Stay Tuned”, although the company does say it will be making a presentation at NAB next year), but it’s obviously aimed at professional users: I wouldn’t plan on throwing out your HC1 or MiniDV camcorder quite yet…
