New System Processes and Improves Low-Res Video

Posted by Richard Baguley

This looks like it could be incredibly useful  if it works as well as it seems to: a company called MotionDSP has developed a system that can take low-res video (such as that shot by camera phones) and process it to produce a sharper video. It does this by examining multiple frames and reconstructing the lost pixels from the differences between them. The examples on their site look very impressive: nearly all of the video compression artifacting is gone, and the video is much, much sharper. This would be incredibly useful if you are trying to incorporate a low-res video into a project. TechCrunch claims that the company is apparently going to be offering a public beta later in the year, and the company is looking to make deals with online video hosting companies like YouTube to use the system to enhance their videos.
