New Wireless Technology Coming to Camcorders

Posted by Richard Baguley

Here’s an interesting article about a new wireless technology that may be coming to camcorders soon. Ultra Wide Band (UWB), as the name suggests, uses a wide frequency band to transmit data instead of the narrow band that existing wireless technologies use. It’s also faster: the company behind it (called Freescale) claims a speed of 500Mbits per second. The benefit of this is that it is less prone to interference and should need less power to work. Freescale is now pushing a set of chips that are designed to be used in camcorders, getting rid of the need for a firewire or USB cable. It’s an interesting idea: we’ve recently seen wireless on digital cameras (in Nikon’s new Coolpix P models), so camcorders could be the next ones to offer wireless uploading. Think about it: instead of having to transfer a video to PC manually, you could bring the camcorder home, press a button and it would automatically upload your videos to your PC, ready for editing…
