Other internal improvements include the 25x optical zoom lens on the SD60 as well as an upgraded image stabilization system. Panasonic continues to use optical image stabilization (OIS) in all of its camcorders, but now these new models feature both Active OIS and Power OIS. We're definitely itching to get the HDC-SD60 into our labs to test this new Power OIS feature.
We're a bit miffed that Panasonic didn't offer more improvements to its manual controls or touchscreen interface. The system is just as easy to use as it was last year, but the touchscreen system isn't conducive for setting precise manual controls. Still, you can always move to higher-end models if you want access to lens rings or control dials. The HDC-SD60 also didn't show us too many new interface features other than an extra picture adjust option (color temperature) and the new smile shutter setting. We are somewhat intrigued by the new Wind Noise canceller setting, however, and we'll try to figure out a good way to test the quality of that feature in our labs.
Overall, we're pretty excited about the HDC-SD60. The camcorder is basically the HDC-SD20, but with an improved lens and sensor, so we are expecting good things from our performance testing.
