Panasonic PV-GS90, the only new MiniDV for 2008

January 6, 2008 - Panasonic will release only one standard definition MiniDV camcorder, the PV-GS90 ($279.95 MSRP), and one standard definition DVD camcorder, the VDR-D50 ($349.95 MSRP), the company announced today at CES. Panasonic is thereby cutting its standard definition MiniDV and DVD 2008 product lines to only these two models, although the company plans to continue the PV-GS320, its top MiniDV camcorder from 2006. The news is not surprising, as both of these formats – and standard definition as a whole – have experienced declining popularity. The Panasonic PV-GS90 (full specs) and VDR-D50 (full specs) feature an updated Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) system.

The PV-GS90 will vary little from its predecessor, the Panasonic PV-GS85 (Review, Specs, $0.00). This year’s body appears to be slightly thinner than its predecessor and will again include an LED light. The optical zoom has been increased from 32x to 42x.

Both camcorders do feature one new innovation, Panasonic’s new “MEGA O.I.S,” the upgraded optical image stabilization system that corrects approximately 4,000 times per second.

The Panasonic PV-GS90 retails for $289.95 and will be available in February. The VDR-D50 will retail for $349.95 for January release.
