September 12, 2007- The bar has been raised in the YouTube video market, thanks to Pure Digital, creator of the original shoot-and-upload Flip camcorder. Pure Digital’s latest edition, the pocket-size Flip Ultra ($149/$179), features a slightly revamped construction, higher resolution, and built-in software. The Flip Ultra is available in black, white, red, orange, and green. Like the Sony NSC-GC1 (Review, Specs, Recent News, $199.00) Net Sharing Cam, the Flip Ultra records 640x480 30fps standard definition video.
"Flip Video Ultra's sleek new design will make it the camcorder of choice for people who want to capture and share life's spontaneous moments, no matter where or when they happen," says Jonathan Kaplan, Chairperson and CEO of Pure Digital Technologies. "Flip Video Ultra makes it easier than ever for consumers to participate in the explosion of sharing video on the web," according to Kevin Conroy, Executive Vice President, Products, AOL.
Pure Digital has given the Flip a style overhaul by offering a handful of bright color choices. The original Flip’s claim to fame was its pop-out USB connection for instantly uploading footage to a computer. Now, as a result of updated, built-in software, users can edit clips, create custom movies, and grab stills from video before uploading directly to sites like YouTube or AOL. Sony’s Net Sharing Cam, the NSC-GC1, offers similar software and uploading features. Compared with the previous Flip, the Flip Ultra offers a larger 1.5” transflective LCD screen, increased 2GB internal memory (60 minute model), and a tripod mount.
The Flip Ultra is available today in two different editions, the 30 minute model and the 60 minute model. The 30 minute (1GB internal memory) model retails for $149.99 while the 60 minute (2GB internal memory) model retails for $179.99. The Sony NSC-GC1 Net Sharing Cam retails for $200 and requires the purchase of Memory Stick PRO and PRO Duo cards.
