RED camera pics out, our analysis: Smooth

Posted by Randall Bennett

We took some of the RED Camera stills into some custom software we use to test cameras and camcorders.  Typically, Imatest isn't used by most manufacturers (although it should be.)

On the whole, the RED camera images aren't exactly perfect; truth be told, we'd love to get a camera to put in our labs and see the results since it seems RED's are flawed.  Although on the images we looked at, at the low resolution they were posted at, we found the red camera's noise levels were literally off our charts for quality.  The noise levels are so low, our person running the test was literally shocked.

However, despite the stellar noise readings, the color readings weren't so hot.  We're giving RED the benefit of the doubt, because to our eyes, the photos look a bit underexposed, and they don't look evenly lit for 2D.  We also noticed some schmutz on the lens in the ISO 8000 shot, so they're not exactly "lab like" conditions. Imatest reported all of the images were at least a half stop under exposed. In the below image, the small rectangle is the "ideal color," while the inner square shows the image after being color corrected for luminance.

Since the shots were under exposed, the noise readings would likely score better than our current analysis.  Noise free filmmaking in a digital world? Perhaps, although we're still waiting to see it in our labs. We talked with our friends at DigitalCameraInfo.com for a comparison to high-end still cams, and they said noise wise it blows away every camera they've tested.  They told us while these images might have some color shifting going on, it's really impossible to gauge any sort of useful color data because all of the images are underexposed, or there's some sort of weird metering errors or something, and we can't really give it a fair comparison to another camera till it's properly exposed.
