January 6, 2008 - Today at CES, Samsung announced three standard definition camcorders, one in each of three major categories. The SC-MX20 ($299 MSRP) is a flash camcorder recording to SDHC/MMC cards. The SC-D382 ($199 MSRP) records to MiniDV tape. The SC-DX103 ($299 MSRP) is a DVD camcorder. All three feature a 34x zoom.

Samsung launched few camcorders at CES, when compared to Sony’s announcement of sixteen new models, Canon’s thirteen, Panasonic’s eight, and JVC’s seven. Samsung is clearly focusing on the lower end of the market, dipping just a toe in the high definition category with the $1000-priced SC-HMX20.

The SC-MX20 records 720 x 480 video using an H.264 codec, which has a greater efficiency than traditional MPEG-2 format. Video is recorded onto SDHC and MMC cards. The camcorder features the swivel grip that debuted on Samsung earlier camcorders. Also included are a 2.7-inch LCD and the iCheck feature that offers battery life and capacity information.

The SC-D382 is largely similar to Samsung’s previous lower-end MiniDV models. It features a piano black finish and a 2.7-inch LCD. The battery has been relocated to an internal cavity that improves the look but will likely decrease battery life.

The SC-DX103 records MPEG-2 video to 8cm DVDs in multiple disc types, including all available dual layer formats. The camcorder has a 2.7-inch LCD and the same swivel grip as the SC-MX20. Like the SC-D382, the battery has been moved to the inside.

Pricing and availability on the SC-MX20 , the SC-D382, the SC-DX103 is yet to be determined.*
