Conclusion

With an MSRP of just $499, the Samsung HMX-R10 represents a very good deal in the mid-range camcorder market. It has a compact design that is smaller than many similarly-priced camcorders and its set of features is extensive and impressive.

The camcorder’s video performance wasn’t the best of its class, but it put up decent numbers in most categories (except in low light sensitivity). It also did quite well in our still image testing, although we’ve seen better numbers from a few other camcorders (like the Sanyo VPC-CG10). Compared to its most direct competitor, the JVC GZ-X900, the Samsung R10 was a better overall performer—despite the fact that it costs roughly half that of the JVC.

The biggest drawback to the R10 is probably its quirky design. Some will likely be put off by the unique, angled lens, and the lack of a right-side hand strap. Others, however, may find the R10 more comfortable to hold and more ergonomically shaped—especially those who aren’t used to a traditional camcorder. The LCD touchscreen on the HMX-R10 has its issues, but they’re no different than the problems associated with all camcorders that include touchscreen LCDs.

If you’re looking for a solid video/photo hybrid, the Samsung HMX-R10 is one of the best to come along. It’s cheaper than the JVC GZ-X900, captures better video than the Sanyo VPC-CG10, and is easier to use than the Sony HDR-TG5V.
