January 6, 2008 - Today at CES Samsung announced a new high definition flash camcorder, the SC-HMX20 ($999 MSRP). It features the ability to record “Full HD” 1080p video at a selectable 30fps or 60fps. Last September, Samsung debuted its first high definition 720p flash camcorder, the SC-HMX10. The SC-HMX10 had an unconventional swivel grip design and touch screen LCD, the first manufacturer to rival Sony’s interface of choice, features continued on the new SC-HMX20.
The SC-HMX20 is equipped with a 1/1.8-inch, 6.4-megapixel CMOS chip that records “FullHD” 1080p video to an internal 8GB flash memory drive. Though the captured video is progressive, the camcorder is only capable of exporting interlaced video. An SDHC/MMC card slot is built in to increase recording time. Samsung has implemented a 300fps slow motion feature that allows true slow motion capture of up to 10 seconds. This feature strikes a similarity towards Sony’s Smooth Slow Record function, which records three seconds of footage at 240fps. The SC-HMX20 has a 2.7-inch wide touch screen LCD display, another familiar Sony standard. The SC-HMX20 is PictBridge compatible and features Component, S-Video, Composite, and HDMI outputs.
The Samsung SC-HMX20 shipping has yet to be determined, as is the price.
