Samsung trio of cams, including first HD offering

Posted by Randall Bennett

Samsung went crazy today, announcing one new HD camcorder, flash based, and two SD camcorders.  Back in January, Samsung accidently announced the SC-HMX10, a concept camcorder that had pretty interesting visuals if nothing else.  While we're still waiting for new official pics (the pic to the right is a photoshopped concept) the camera sounds like an interesting entry into the HD game.  The SC-HMX10 sports a 1/6" CMOS, 10x optical zoom, a 2.7" touch screen and 8GB of internal memory.  While the $799 pricetag might feel a little steep for some, the cam does have a mic input on the back and records 720p video using standard h.264 (no AVCHD here!) and will fit about 90 minutes onto the included 8GB.  The cam also sports an SDHC slot, so theoretically as new SDHC cards start hitting, it'll be able to store up to 32GB.

The second new cam in the trio of new announcements is a DVD/Flash hybrid.  The SC-DX10 is priced at $549 and features a 1/6" CCD, with 26x optical zoom, touch screen and 4GB of internal flash memory.  The camera can transfer from flash to DVD on its own battery power, eliminating the need to find a plug.  Samsung also told us about some "swivel grip" making the camera easier to hold, but right now we're scant on details.

Cam number three, the cheapest of the trio, is the $299 SC-MX10.  Sounds like Samsung is targeting this camera toward the YouTube crowd, and the standard-def 1/6" CCD would likely agree.  For people interested in zoom, the 34x optical zoom and 1200x digital zoom might impress a person or two, although we don't know too many of people zooming 34x at our kids' soccer games, let alone 1200.

More details to come on the main site, plus, as usual, we'll put the cams through their paces when they're released.  We've also got more information on the main site, so head there as we'll update with more breaking info.
