Some Mac G5s Leaking Coolant
Posted by Richard Baguley
It seems that some dual processor PowerMac G5 systems may be leaking coolant from their processor water cooling systems. The writer of this story details claims that several systems have leaked coolant. This is a big issue: the liquid coolant conducts heat away from the processors, so if the coolant leaks, the processors can overheat. And a bigger concern is the loose coolant: you really don’t want liquid sloshing around inside your computer. If it touches a live component, it’s goodnight Mac. I’d suggest that if you have a dual processor PowerMac G5, you open the case and check for any signs of a pale green liquid (the coolant is colored to make it easier to see). If you see any signs of this, shut the system down immediately and call Apple. According to the information I have read, the problem is supposed to only occur with the first generation of water-cooled PowerMac systems, but it’s a good idea to check it anyway; electricity and water don’t mix. (image from Not Mike; read about his leaking G5 experience here).
