May 31, 2006 - Today, Sony announced the release of their new "Digital Reality Creation Multifunction v2.5 (DRC-MFv2.5)" technology. According to Sony, DRC-MFv2.5 can both generate 1080p signals from SD and improve the quality of 1080i HD.

The new technology’s features include improved signal processing of numerous HD signal types and the creation of 1080p signals from normal HD signals. DRC-MFv2.5 can also enhance 1080i signals converted from standard definition video, maximizing the performance of HD screens when displaying content that originated in SD. Improving on their “Digital Mapping” technology, Sony claims the new DRC-MFv2.5 should reduce noise and even “make video objects ‘close to real.’”
Sony will implement DRC-MFv2.5 technology in its high definition flat screen televisions, including the high-end Bravia series. No specific models were named in the press release.
