Sony MHS-PM1 |
January 7, 2009 – Today's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas saw the entry of Sony into the high definition MP4 market with its new line of "Webbie HD" camcorders. These four new camcorders were introduced to compete with the increasing popularity of camcorders like the Flip MinoHD, RCA Small Wonder, and Kodak Zi6—camcorders that emphasize compact design and ease of use over video performance and manual controls.
The new Webbie HD series includes two new models: the traditional horizontal body type of the MHS-CM1 and the new compact, vertical design of the MHS-PM1. Both camcorders will record high definition 1080p video in either a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio. They are equipped with a 5-megapixel CMOS sensor and capture MPEG-4 video and 5-megapixel photos.
The emphasis is on easy file transfer—whether it's from the camcorder to your computer or using the built-in software for quick content upload to popular video-sharing websites like YouTube. Both camcorders offer expandable storage capacity via Sony's proprietary MemoryStick media and come in three different colors: silver, eggplant, and orange.
The MHS-PM1 has a highly compact, vertical body design similar to most ultra-compact camcorders on the market. Weighing just four ounces and small enough to fit into most coat pockets or purses, the PM1 is competing for a slice of the Flip Mino market. One unique design feature is the swivel lens, which rotates up to 270 degrees to help you find those unique viewing angles and to facilitate self recording.

Rounding out Sony's Webbie HD lineup is the MHS-CM1, a slim and lightweight product that follows the traditional horizontal camcorder design. Features and controls have been simplified to appeal to the entry-level consumer, but the traditional design offers some advantages not available on the ultra-compact MHS-PM1. The CM1 includes a 5x optical zoom lens, LED video light, and 2.5-inch LCD screen.
