Sony 2008 Camcorders Returning for 2009

January 7, 2009 – Today, Sony announced two new standard definition DVD camcorders: the DCR-DVD650 and the DCR-DVD850. These camcorders come as direct replacements of Sony's previous DCR-DVD610 and DCR-DVD810. This represents a reduction in Sony's DVD lineup, with the company discontinuing one of its standard definition DVD camcorders and eliminating the high definition DVD lineup altogether.

Both the DCR-DVD650 and the DCR-DVD850 are very similar in architecture and internal optics and processing to last year's models. They include the 60x optical zoom Carl Zeiss lens, Super SteadyShot image stabilization, and 2.7-inch touch panel LCD. Both camcorders will record to multiple formats, including Sony's proprietary MemoryStick media.

The DCR-DVD650 represents the entry-level DVD camcorder for Sony this year, while the DCR-DVD850 comes with a few more bells and whistles than its sister model. For about $130 more dollars, the DVD850 records in Dobly Digital 5.1 surround sound with a built-in zoom microphone and has a third media option: 16GB of internal memory.

The Sony DCR-DVD650 and DCR-DVD850 are both expected to ship in February, with an expected retail price of $299 and $429, respectively.
