Sony DCR-SX60 |
January 7, 2009 – Sony has entered the standard definition flash memory category of the camcorder market, with today's CES announcement of the DCR-SX40, DCR-SX41, and DCR-SX60. All three models are standard definition and record primarily to embedded solid state memory. These three camcorders will join Sony's new HDR-CX100, a high definition model that also records to solid state memory.
The Sony DCR-SX40, SX41, and SX60 will all ship with the ability to connect the camcorder to Sony's DVDirect Express burner, a separate product that Sony is marketing for easy memory archival and playback. The three models will have the same basic architecture as Sony's HDD models, but it's unclear whether they will carry the same internal processing and optics.
All three will support hybrid movie recording onto Sony's proprietary MemoryStick media and will come with Sony's standard 2.7-inch touch panel LCD. All three will come equipped with a 60x optical zoom Carl Zeiss lens.
The Sony DCR-SX60 represents the top of the line for the company's standard definition flash memory camcorders. In addition to carrying all the features of its sister models, the SX60 will have the largest capacity (16GB embedded flash memory) and include Sony's Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization.
The DCR-SX40 and DCR-SX41 have smaller capacities—4GB for the SX40 and 8GB for the SX41—but are available in different colors. The red, blue, and silver options are intended to appeal to an entry-level demographic that favors personalization in consumer electronics.
