Sony HDR-CX12 has arrived

Posted by Michael Perlman

The Sony HDR-CX12 ($900 MSRP) is in the house! We've just received our review unit of Sony’s latest AVCHD solid state camcorder, and will be putting it through our extensive lab testing process soon. The HDR-CX12 is an upgrade from last year’s HDR-CX7 (Review, Specs, Recent News, ) that features a Cam Control dial, just like the one found on the HDR-SR11 (Specs, $1099.00) and HDR-SR12 (Review, Specs, $1417.66) HDD cams. Sony has also boosted the video processing, utilizing the new BIONZ processing with EXMOR technology. The HDR-CX12 has a 1/3.13-inch CMOS chip with a 5,660,000 gross pixel count, which should surpass the performance of the HDR-CX7’s 3,200,000 pixel 1/2.9-inch CMOS chip. Sony has also ramped up the max bitrate—but only by a tad. The HDR-CX12 is now capable of reaching 16Mbps, instead of the HDR-CX7’s max, 15 Mbps. We'll know more about what differences these changes may make to the performance of the camcorder soon; we'll be putting its performance to the test in our review that is coming soon.

As well as these imaging system changes, you’ll also see a burlier port design, borrowing hinged doors from the venerable HDR-SR11 and HDR-SR12, a 10MP max still image resolution (though interpolated), and a 12x Optical Zoom. The HDR-CX12 also comes with a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo card, while most other solid state HD cams require a separate purchase for removable memory. Will these enhancements be enough to intimidate the untouchable Canon HF10? We’ll have the HDR-CX12 review out soon, so stay tuned…
