Compression (7.0)
The HDR-HC3 (Review, Specs, $969.99) uses the same date rate as SD MiniDV, 25Mbps. It is 1080 interlaced video with 60 fields per second. HDV must be compressed into an MPEG2 format to fit on the MiniDV tape.
Media (7.5)
The HDR-HC3 captures video to standard MiniDV cassettes, which are widely available and relatively cheap.
Editing (8.0)
Thankfully, it has become much easier in the last year for the average consumer to import and edit HD video. Nearly all major platforms (Premiere and Premiere Pro, Vegas, CyberLink, etc.) support HD. No software comes included with the HDR-HC3, but trust us when we say there is no shortage of options.
