Sony HDR-UX1 Camcorder Review

The Sony HDR-UX1 might be the start of something big. As any eager reader knows, this is the first high definition DVD camcorder, and the first of two camcorders to use a new HD compression called AVCHD. Finally freed from the confines of tape, HD can now be recorded to DVD, flash memory, and HDD. But how does it compare to our beloved HDV? For now, let’s just say that we are pretty darn happy. There are some major workflow issues that need to be solved, and the compression needs work, but the HDR-UX1 has a lot to offer: a multifunction ring, 3.5” LCD, HDMI-out, and we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the low light. Is this a worthy successor to the HDR-HC3, or merely pandering to a consumer base that wants HD and DVD, but can’t wait for Blu-ray camcorders? Come in and find out.
