Sony unveils XDCAM EX - new flash based media cards

Posted by Adam Nielson

Great news from Sony at this year's NAB event, as they announced a camcorder sized entry into the XDCAM family with the new EX. What little we know about the camera has been well covered by our front page counterparts, including a video interview with Sony VP Bob Ott. The sub $8000 EX shoots in the XDCAM HD format (a flavor of HDV) and features nicely sized 1/2 inch imaging sensors and the ability to shoot in 24p. However, possibly the most intriguing feature is the camera's introduction of a new solid state media format not unlike P2 cards form Panasonic.

SxS cards (pronounced  S by S) are compatible with ExpressCard slots like those found on the MacBook Pro and many newer PC laptops. They come in 8 and 16 GB varieties, and from the looks of it, the EX holds two of them. A little loose math indicates roughly 2 hours of record time on a fully loaded unit.

Clearly the XDCAM EX is a shot across the bow of the popular AG-HVX200, and if nothing else, proof of the fact Panasonic was right about solid state camcorder memory. However, as with all technology, Sony's more recently developed cards are forward compatible, while Panasonic'sPCMCIA based cards are seeing their slots quickly phased out. From what little we know about the XDCAM EX, it will be a serious competitor in the high-end tapeless camcorder market.

We also recently reported on pro camera maker Ikegami's plans to develop a third flash based video format.
