January 25, 2007 - Earlier this morning, news of a high defintion Canon HV20 (Review, Specs, Recent News, $903) camcorder was leaked when a detailed product page appeared on Circuit City. Among the information that was revealed: a 10x optical zoom, a CMOS sensor with a 2.96 gross MP, and a 2.7" LCD. It will record to MiniDV, which means an HDV/DV compression. Circuit City's selling price was was at $1099.
The Circuit City page quickly disappeared, but not before gaining the attention of several sly bloggers, who informed Gizmodo, Engadget, and other tech blogs. Canon has made no public comment on the camcorder, though there was a fairly high level of detail from Circuit City, including bulleted highlights, a brief spec sheet, and ordering information - certainly enough to create a sense of legitimacy.
If the rumors are to be believed (currently thriving on DVinfo.com since early January), the HV20 is scheduled to replace the HV10, which was released only months ago. No pictures of the HV20 have yet surfaced, so little is known about the design. It will feature an HDMI jack, which was absent from the HV10.
Canon announced three new standard defintion MiniDV camcorders and four new standard definition DVD camcorders at CES earlier this month, including the new top of the line DC50. There was no mention of high definition, however, despite Sony, Panasonic, and JVC all releasing new HD camcorders across a variety of recording media.
CamcorderInfo.com has no other publicly available information on the HV20. Canon declined to confirm whether or not the model exists.
