VHS Is 30 Years Old

I never remember birthdays, which is why I missed this one: the VHS tape format is 30 years old this month. The format was born when JVC released the first VHS recorder in October of 1976, so it’s appropriate that JVC are being honored with a IEEE Milestone In Electrical Engineering and Computing award for pioneering the format at a ceremony in the same hotel where they launched the new format 30 years ago. The IEEE has a good page that outlines the history of VHS here.
Although the technology has moved on since then (with optical and disk-based media now coming to the fore), you can’t underestimate the impact that VHS had: for the first time, users could record their own TV shows and movies. Combine this with the launch of the first camcorders in 1983, and you had the beginnings of the home movie revolution that we are now living in…
