VariZoom LED on-camera lighting

VariZoom's 2010F S-2000 looks to undo many of the problems with traditional on-camera lights. For starters, zero heat emission means you get to keep your finger prints (all of them!) and not have to worry about damaging equipment due to excessive heat. Besides the lack of burning flesh, you get the equivalent of a 40W bulb, an on-board diffuser, full dim control with no discernable color shift and my favorite, a filter that lets you switch between 5600K and 3200K color temps. Add to all those great things a pretty good battery life sans battery belt, albeit a battery not directly attached to the light, and you've got yourself a pretty good thing going.
We know what you might be thinking though, since it's LED based it's going to cost a ton of money, ala
LitePanels, but you'd be wrong. At $370, it's a little outside of the low-end shooter's price range, but for people who care about production quality, it seems a fair contender. Friend of the CCI Blog,
Matthew Jepsen, wrote up an
extensive review in this month's DV magazine, and he was pretty impressed. He gives it a 4/5, and says the light is specifically targeted at event videographers, which doesn't just mean wedding video peeps; this light looks to be useful for any run-n-gunner.
