According to sources from both within Canon and those close to Canon, Canon will be replacing the Elura 40MC camcorder with a new Elura 50 model. CamcorderInfo.com has also acquired a promotional video clip for the Elura 50 which provides many details and pictures of the new camcorder.

According to the promotional video, the Elura 50 includes a 680K pixel CCD - the same resolution CCD which the Elura 40MC had. Although the model apparently drops the 'MC' from the name, the Elura 50 still records to Memory Cards. In the past, Canon had distinguished between those camcorders which included an external memory card slot from those which didn't by adding MC to the end of the name. The Elura 50 can record 1024 x 768 pixel resolution stills to SD cards. The camcorder includes a 10x optical zoom / 400x digital zoom and a 2 in. LCD screen. It is not known if the camcorder includes a color or a black and white viewfinder. Apparently, the Elura 50 lacks the distinguishing green / blue colored plastic parts which the Elura 40MC had.

The Elura 50 includes seven auto exposure modes, manual exposure control, and manual focus. It is unknown whether or not the Elura 50 offers manual white balance and manual shutter speed as other sub $1,000 Canon MiniDV camcorders do. The Elura 50 also includes Includes color night mode. The camcorder can record Motion JPEG video to the SD cards. The Elura 50 also includes the Canon direct print function through the USB port, which allows the user to print digital stills from their camcorder straight to their printer, bypassing the need for a computer. The Elura 50 includes Control-L,USB, Microphone In, AV in / out and S-Video in / out ports. The Elura 50 can also includes an analog to digital video pass through filter which allows for converting analog video to digital video on the fly.

A very reliable source from inside Canon confirmed that an Elura 40MC replacement would be announced very soon. The source, who asked to remain anonymous stated that the new camcorder will maintain the same small horizontal body type of the Elura 40MC - a fact which the pictures from the promotional video confirmed. There are also other clear signs that the Elura 40MC is going to be replaced. Canon has discountinued the Elura 40MC and it is no longer available to retailers. The company is also offering a $100 mail in rebate on the Elura 40MC for people who purchase it before April 31st. Often Canon and other camcorder manufacturers will drop the price of a camcorder right before announcing a replacement so they can clear their inventory of the old model to make space for the new one.

CamcorderInfo.com was unable to obtain pricing information or availability information on the Elura 50. However, considering that it is a replacement for the Elura 40MC, we can expect the pricing to be around $900, the price of the Elura 40MC.
