In an interview with Tim Smith of Canon at the National Association of Broadcasters annual convention, Smith told CamcorderInfo.com that a replacement for the Canon XL1S is ''At least one year away.'' Smith also said that it was likely that the camcorder would include 24 frames progressive video. These are Canon's first on-the-record comments regarding the 'XL2' or XL1S replacement.

In the interview when discussing a possible XL1S replacement, Smith, the Technical Marketing & Sales Training Manager for the Video Division of Canon stated that ''Currently, Canon sees 24 progressive as very viable for future product.'' When asked whether or not the Panasonic AG-DVX100, with it's 24 frames progressive scan video feature is hurting XL1S sales, Smith said the the Panasonic model is not having an effect on their product sales. Regarding the development process, Smith stressed the constant interaction that Canon has with their existing XL1S and XL1 owners, ''We will give the people what they need when they need it.''

Refuting many rumors that are circulating on the web of an XL1S replacement, a so called 'XL2' being close to release, Smith stated that ''We [Canon] have not seen an XL1S replacement design yet.'' Smith did state however that the replacement for an XL1S is at least a year away.
