Pioneer's new DVD/CD Writer, the DVR-A06, is not only the sixth generation of DVD writers from Pioneer, but the first from the company to bridge the "format gap" between the two main, competing DVD recordable formats.

In a press release dated May 19th, 2003, a Pioneer company spokesman cited confusion over competing DVD formats as a major source of customer disappointment in DVD writers. Pioneer's DVR-A06 appears to be aimed sqaurely at ending confusion and customer disatisfaction in the recordable DVD marketplace by featuring the ability to write to both DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/-RW media.

In addition to its ability to write DVDs at up to 4x speed, the DVR-A06 can write CD-R/-RW formats, burning them at speeds of up to 16x on supported media.

The DVR-A06 is slated for a June release in the U.S., and will sell for a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $329.

A Japanese version, the DVR-A06-J will also be released in June. While technical specifications of the U.S. DVD writer have yet to appear on Pioneer's U.S. website (as of May 21).
