UK Publication Total DVD Online is reporting that the DVD Forum will approve the High Definition DVD format supported by Toshiba and NEC. The move will most likely create a format war in the HD DVD market.
In what will certainly be a controversial move, the DVD forum chose the HD DVD format which can hold 40GB of data. Nine other manufacturers, including Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and Pionner support a competing format called Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray discs can hold 27GB of data on one side. The companies hope to develop a 50GB dual sided disc sometime soon.
Total DVD Online reported that the announcement won't likely be until May. With the Forum putting weight behind one format, and 9 major players in the industry putting their weight behind the other it will likely be a major format war.
