JVC has announced that it is shipping the much anticipated JY-HD10U camcorder. The GR-HD1, announced earlier this year, and first shown in Japan in October, is the first consumer or prosumer high definition camcorder.

The JY-HD10U can record 30 frames per second progressive video at 720 lines of resolution. The camcorder can upconvert that to a 1080 interlaced HDTV signal, or downconvert it to a 480 interlaced signal for standard definition television. The camcorder includes a native 16:9 chip and records the video in MPEG-2 format to MiniDV tapes.

In their press release, the company stated Robert Mueller, executive vice president of JVC Professional Products Company stated ''With the release of the JY-HD10U camcorder, we have taken a solid step forward with our 'HD for the Masses' initiative.''

The JY-HD10 is very similar to the GR-HD1, the nearly identical consumer version of the camcorder. It is not exactly known when the GR-HD1 will ship, however currently the shipping date is slated for July 1st.
