JVC announced a new VCR capable of recording High Definition Television at full quality. Their new VCR, the HM-DH30000U operates at high speed recording the JVC's proprietary D-VHS format (Digital VHS).

The format can record at 28.2 Mbps which the company says surpasses the standard 19.3 Mbps HDTV standard. Each cassette has a 50 Gigabyte capacity. This allows for four hours of recording at the full high speed HD quality, eight hours of recording at the D-VHS STD 14.1 Mbps mode, and 24 hours of recording at the LS3 Mode allowing for 24 Hours of recording. All video recording on the special D-VHS cassettes will record in MPEG2 format. However, very few D-VHS models have been made and they all have been made by JVC. The tapes are hard to come by and only made by JVC, and can only be played on the few expensive D-VHS VCRs out there.

The user can also record in VHS, S-VHS and S-VHS ET with the new VCR. The unit connects to the TV to pull off the HDTV signal through an FireWire IEEE 1394 port. The company said that it can through the FireWire port record all of the HDTV 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i ATSC broadcasts. The company also said the FireWire port will allow for recording off of a camcorder. Meaning this VCR can do perfect copies of your digital footage.

The deck has analog inputs and outputs and a HD Component Video Output for connection to a HD television. Because no one wants to search through a 24 hour tape to find their program, JVC has included a navigation system in the VCR that will remember the titles of 2000 programs and where they are located on the tape - if you enter them in. You can browse through the list to find a program and the VCR will wind the tape for you to that program.
